A larger commercial entity tends to be trusted by most.

Possible antivirus companies include (in no particular order); Norton, McAfee, Sophos, etc.

Here is a link to the C/NET website with "their" recommendations.

The company I work for uses Sophos. I have Norton at home. All the AV companies will say theirs is the best of course.

Good luck with your quest.

I use the free version of AVG antivirus, and am quite happy with it. It keeps probing me to upgrade, but I just keep opting out. I am real sour on McAffee after an incident when I first got this PC. The details have been forgotten. Windows has its own version which I think is OK, but you cannot access it after AVG has been started. We had Norton at work (about 10 years ago). It turned the computer into a slow dog.

Malwarebytes is one of the better total solutions, although not always well behaved.

also Checkout Zone Alarm. AVG was once one of the best and is now one of the worst. I do not advise that one any longer.
