Hollywood Writers Union Strike

It is the same story as with musicians. The internet has provided a venue to distribute their work without due compensation. That is, when a musician creates and publishes a song, that musician is given a small percentage of every CD sold. Some internet download sites allow people to download that music free, so there is no royalty paid to the creator.

The same situation exists for the screen writers when TV shows and films are distributed freely on the internet by sites that also advertise and generate advertising dollars yet do not pay royalty fees to the creators of the work they distribute.

I am not following this that closely, and I don't think this is a classic case where union people think they are underpaid as much as I think they are stating that they should be paid a fee for all cases of distribution (beyond "fair use" provisions).

In principle I would agree. However, TV is such a boring and useless activity in my mind that I just really don't care.

Your assumptions are not correct. Just because they make very good money, and just because they make more money than others on the production crew, does not mean that they will not go on strike.

The bottom line is they asked for even more money, based on revenue from the internet and other outlets where their writing was being used, even though they are already well paid.
