Preparing for an Oral Exam in Civil Engineering

11/06/2007 8:09 PM

I have been invited to an "Oral Exam interview" for a City job as Junior Engineer. I was wondering what to expect at such an interview. Will it be highly technical? Could someone provide me with some sample questions.

They will probably ask you all kinds of questions on anything and everything related to Civil Engineering. If you are a graduate CE you will do fine. Give honest answers. If you don't know, say so. If you know how to find the answer tell how you would approach the problem. They will know if you are throwing the bull at them!

Good luck and let us know how it went.

Stirling Stan:

Thanks for your tip for the stamps. I wrote to you all and gave the full report. Now I am spending my weekends in the kitchen with sink filled with luke warm water and the blob of stamps floating and I am peeling off the stamp panes one by one, dring off between the paper towels and putting them ont he table to dry off thru the night.

Regards;

Nadeem

The City always try to have people whose can determine impact on cost. If you have enough expertise, you should be ok on technical questions. The most valuable A players in these times are the ones who could handle projects under a specific budgets $ Money is the key. Just be honest! Good luck.

They are calling you for a Junior Engineering position and will not and should not ask questions beyond your job responsiblities. Anyway, sit right, have eye contact, and respond spontaneously and no apples in the throat. People like to hear what your thoughts are and not thoughtover and made up answers.

Be honest like Stirling Stan said and there is nothing wrong in accepting the fact that the question he/she asked is valid and you do not know the answer, What is important that you can and shall find the answer and you know where you can find the answer. Do not sweat and every thing will be fine. Just go with confidence and walk in with confidence and you MUST have smile (natural and not phony) on your face, firm hand shake, sit up straigt and not on the edge of the seat. Take your seat after the interviewer sits down. If they take you to lunch, order after the host orders and finsih when the others do and do not finish your plate completely. Leave some there in the plate. Never cut the talker off and wait until he finishes his sentence.

Above are few tips from the recruiters and hiring managers that I read.

It is normal that people get nervous for the interview and it is normal. Believe me the interviewer is also as nervous as you may be.

Good Luck and tell us how did it go.

The most important thing you need to remember is that "civil engineer" is an oxymoron. If you can slip in the one about the waste disposal system and the leisure centre you'll go down well!
