API Code for Horizontal Tanks

Do you need a pressure vessel or storage tank? There is a difference.

Do you need a design for new one or inspection of the existing?

A. For pressure vessel :API 510 Pressure Vessel Inspection Code and for design of a new pressure vessel see ASME BPVC, Section VIII, Division 1.

B. For storage Tanks : API 520 for Large welded, low pressure storage tank & API 650 for Welded steel tanks for oil storage.

Thanks for all your several responses in the forum.

I have the same issue wih the previous guy. I want to design a horizontal cylinderical diesel storage tank but do not know which code is applicable.

API 560 and 520 are for vertical tanks.

pls. enlighten me further.

1.2.5 Although the rules in this standard do not cover horizontal tanks, they are not intended to preclude the application of appropriate portions to the design and construction of horizontal tanks designed in accordance with good engineering practice. The details for horizontal tanks not covered by these rules shall be equally as safe as the design and construction details provided for the tank shapes that are expressly covered in this standard.

You also have UL-142 specifically for horizontal storage tanks.
