You mean you haven't looked in the equipment item's maintenance manual?

It is common practice to tension a roller chain so that the chain will move approximately 1/4 inch at a position half way between the sprockets. This is a field adjustment. The proper adjustment will depend on what device are being connected. Each manufacture may spec out different bearings on the input or output shafts of the devices. Excessive side load by the chain may lead to premature bearing failure. The manufacturer's specs. will need to be acquire from them.

1/4 inch slack would not be nearly enough on large size chain , all depends on chain size, load , center distance between sprockets , etc . Tons of info on the internet , just look .

Adjust the tension sprocket/spring/whatever until the spring(s) reach the correct length or the chain reaches recommended free play limit based upon manufacturer's specifications. For more information than this, please refer to your O&M manual.
