Baked Enamel Finish

11/08/2007 9:46 AM

I have seen in many appliances (such as cookers) sheet metal final finish given as baked enamal finished?

What does this mean and how is it achieved?

Anyone there who can help me to find technolgy behind this and any suggestions on how I can set up a finishing unit in a small way. I would greatly appreciate any help.

Exactly like it suggests. The appliance is coated with an enamel and baked in a furnace for typically 7 to 8 hours

most of the time is spent slowly cooling the item to allow the varying coefficients to cold flow to a tolerable level at room temp as the temperature drops so there are fewer residual stresses.

Baked on enamel, is not a paint at all but a powdered glass powder that is heated to a high temp. (approx.750 to 850 degrees) and at that temp the glass will fuse to the metal. It is a very durable finish. There is really no paint involved. Hopes this helps. Sincerely, Rena

If you're thinking of using this finish it works best on materials developed to suit the process like this enamelling steel from Corus.
