Surface Mount Logic Tester Clip

11/15/2020 3:03 PM

I have a pencil-type logic probe, and a 16 pin logic clip with self-power seeking, and led indicators on every pin,but I am having no luck finding such a tester for the Surface mount chips.

Thanks in advance for any leads on this !

Thanks for the links, but I have those types already.

What I am seeking is a spring loaded, clam shell clamp-on multi-pin clip with led indicators for status of each pin.

Must be suitable for Surface mount pin spacing.

I have one for standard 16 pin chips.

That one is for DIP chips. It is similar to the one I have, but it does not have status LEDs for each pin.Not good for SMD (SOIC) chips, pin spacing is wrong.

I realize that some logic states are too fast for LED,and the human eye, and a scope is required to observe the signal but a chip-clip can aid in first-look diagnostics.

I am familiar with the "break-out" clips, that bring out the signals from the board to an easier-to-access pin,but I have these already. It would save time to have a clip-on status clip for a simple high/low indication on each pin when testing multiple SMD chips,it reduces the chances of shorting out the pins.

The problem is that there is no surface mount package common enough to make a "16 pin clip" viable. How many ICs on the board you're looking at have physically similar 16 pin packages? Could you even physically mount a clip on any of them.

I believe you'd be better trying to buy a cheap DSO with Logic analyser capability. It's almost certainly the most cost effective way to buy the number of individual test clips you need.

I am not looking for a 16 pin clip on.I stated that that was what I had.

I am looking for a clip on for SOIC chips.

I know all pins cannot be clipped at once, but it would be a quick go-no go test when testing surface mount chips.I don't mind moving the clip to the appropriate pins.

I found something I can use.It is a SMD/SMJ to DIP adapter that breaks out the pins to a dip spacing. Then I can use my dip tester to test the chips,16 pins at a time.

Thanks for all of the great help from everyone.

I believe that that adapter is designed to solder onto the PCB position for a 32 pin Small Outline J lead component.

You may be able to to solder it onto a 32 pin gull wing device, with a lot of skill you might be able to solder it onto a 32 pin J lead device. In both those cases don't forget you will need to remove it again when you're finished with all the potential for opens and shorts that that involves.

You are right..I sent the wrong image. This is the correct one.It breaks out the tiny pins to a more usable size, and lessens the possibility of shorting out the pins.
