The Origin of Spring Break

02/22/2006 11:14 AM

I just heard an interesting factoid - and I'm wondering if someone can verify it. Spring Break was created not to allow students a break from studying (or to party, either), but to help prevent flu from becoming an epidemic. By sending the students home from schools, transmission vectors for the flu were drastically cut back. Does anyone know for sure?

Winter break, actually.

At least in NYS Public Schools. That's what some physician friends tell me.

Not certain, but I understand it to be for spring planting, as well as summer break for harvesting. We once were a agriculturally dominate society.

Yeah, I always believed the basis was agricultural as well, but the argument makes sense. It makes even more sense if as a previous poster stated, that the Flu was the reason for Winter break (not just the holiday season). I've been reading a lot about the Spanish Influenza outbreak of 1917-18, along with the progression of Bird Flu, so this is weighing on my mind. Thanks for your response.

That's interesting, and plausable, but your second point is truly noteworthy. Since I live in Florida we see a lot of illness break out when the "Snow Birds" flock in. We are also highly concerned because of the attraction to the area by "Imports" coming in from overseas. Add resistance to medical treatment due to the high cost of medical care, and the unbelievable amount of unclean currency exchange, it's not hard to imagine the potential. Teach our kids to wash their hands frequently (adults too)and we just may stave off a true global epidemic.

I've always heard it was created to let kids off to help out with the family farm.
