Large hands,small keyboards

02/22/2023 1:14 PM

I have large hands and it is difficult to type rapidly on the modern keyboards.Add to that, slight arthritis in my fingers, and I am now down to one- at- time keying.

I have looked for a large format keyboard but no success.I have found keyboards with large keys and letters, but no keyboards with the keys spaced further apart.

Anyone have any sources of suggestions?

Thanks in advance for all assistance on this.

Have you tried speech to text, an AI assistant, virtual keyboard?

Maybe that's a little too big....

anyway here's one that might work, and is considerably cheaper....

Thanks,SE .These have large letters, but same size keys.

Key size and spacing is the key here.(pardon the pun).

Seems to me there would be a a lucrative market for such a keyboard.I know everyone wants to conserve desk top space, but some are willing to sacrifice space for utility.

One of these setup higher should project a larger keyboard. I am wondering if it would pick up key strokes as well with the distance change.

I came up empty handed.

B.T.W., when I placed my fingers flat on a standard keyboard, by the time I got to the fourth finger, it was half-a-key over. My fingers are crowded on the keyboard as well so I end up "hovering" over the keyboard and not keeping my all my fingers on the "home" keys. I can still touch type that way and I only keep my pinkie fingers (aA and ;:) on their respective home keys.

I wonder how Shaq does it?

Come with me now,if you dare,to those wondrous days of yesteryear when people were not so sensitive and introspective and entitled.

There was a scandal in DC concerning the secretaries of senators.

They had no typing or secretarial skills at all,but they were beautiful and well paid.

Barry Goldwater(Who?) made a statement that would be considered offensive today.

He said,(not an exact quote, but words to that effect,as best I can remember):"Some of the typists in DC can really type. The rest are just hunt-and-peckers"

Some where in between the standard and the Giant is what I am looking for.

This one seems to be at the other end of the spectrum.

I learned to type on an old fashioned mechanical typewriter, and your speed was limited by the mechanics of the typewriter.Too fast, and the keys would jam together.

Similar to this one:

And you had to really press down hard and a long travel distance to make the keys move.Things are so much easier now and would be better with a larger spacing on the keyboard keys.

They have revived the Ti 99-4A voice synthesizer module.

It came with many optional modules fro various functions.

I had one about a hundred years ago,(1979 or so)when the price dropped to $49 from a previous introductory price price of thousands of$$$.

Ti was the first PC to use the Motorola 68000 16 bit CPU though it had industrial control uses.

The voice sounds exactly like the Ti 99 synthesizer voice.

My only complaint with it was: If you typed in 1988,for instance,it would repeat the digits a one at a time instead of saying it as one word.

Sounds Exactly like the old TI voice to me.

The info shows it being used as a text to voice ,but will it function as a standard keyboard?I presume it will. Will it work both ways:Speech to text?

Ditto. Most "modern" keyboards are so sensitive that they pick up an extra letter even if a finger brushes or drags over another key. I have a Dell keyboard now that is better, but still not great--meaning I still have to reread everything because I get so many typos from those extra letters. I have not tried a mechanical keyboard, but many say they are great. The long-stroke manual typewriters are inviting. Now, can we combine the good qualities of mechanical and long-stroke with the ease of correction, etc, of the electronic word processors?

His keys are shaped like basketball hoops. He never misses.Sometimes he types with his hands behind his back, just for fun.

I've never progressed beyond one finger typing but it has not slowed me down.

Maybe go the AI route and get an "eyeboard" like Steven Hawking used. It gave an output at speach rate with no direct contact.

How do we patent that idea? The mouse will soon be obsolete.

Or a mouse to manage the point and click process with the eyeboard.

You are a technology oriented person, Why not just do dictations instead of typing on the keyboard? You can probably ask Alexa or Siri to print your words directly on to your screen?

Microsoft Word has a "dictation" function that might help a lot of us. I tried it last night, and it did better than I expected. I'll have to try it for transcribing bits of Village Council minutes from the 1890s that are handwritten in cursive. Typing them has been a pain due to the extra letters I get with a laptop.

Yes and I concur that using MS word will be a lot better approach than teaching Alexa to recognize your voice and understand how you pronounce and relate to every words a person needed to be printed..

I use these. They are the new version of the old IBM model M "clicky" keyboard. Pricey but worth it. Two-part Molded keycaps and the famous capacitive spring-click key switches that can be cleaned and re-built. People who type a lot, like writers and coders love these keyboards.

Could you modify a standard keyboard by simply making all the keys smaller. The keyboard on the laptop I am using has slightly smaller keys:-

As long as the keys remain on the same pitch, the smaller they are the more space around them. Would that help?

You might try these finger size reducers...

You should be able to type really fast with so many fingers...

Alternately these might work....

Might seem a bit awkward at first...

Probably impractical, but when I was a juror one of the most fascinating things about the whole process was the stenotype machine the court recorder was using. It had large keys and plenty of space between, but was phonetically based and used a totally different approach for encoding phonetically... I see there's an open-source hardware version, found at, of all places,

Stenotype - Wikipedia

Another dying skill is shorthand.

Secretaries in the past would transcribe as fast as the spoken word.

Very few secretaries can do that now, they are all retired.

My problem is mostly not the SIZE of the keyboard, but its sensitivity to fingers brushing neighboring keys combined with some arthritis.
