Fibre optic connector

03/13/2023 12:49 PM

I've been searching for a fibre optic connector that would enable us to attach a fibre optic connector to the hard fibre optic input window of one of our detectors. I've talked to several connector suppliers who offer bulkhead mount F-SMA connectors but none have a solution for the fibre optic stub needed from the connector to our input window.

Has anyone come across a connector which might do this?

When I can't find something it's usually because I'm using the wrong terminology...maybe you can find one here...

Single mode glass, multi mode glass or plastic fiber?

It is not very elegant, but if you are not going very far and not going very fast then plastic optical fiber (POF) might be worth considering. You will get a 100% galvanic break with low cost and very forgiving parts and fiber.

The input fibre coupling would be down to our customers.

That is a possibility, lens coupled instead of hard coupling. Probably more losses but much easier to install. I'll look into this further, thanks for the tip.

What is this part?

If you designed a few interchangeable parts with holes designed to fit the fibre in use: then you could fit a slightly long piece of fibre in the bulkhead connector; then slice off the fibre flush with the face.

That is silicon rubber encapsulation. We add that to mask the input optic & prevent stray light from giving spurious readings.

Do you need fiber tip to go through thickness of adaptor plate +5.3mm (and make optical/physical contact with window)?. You may turn your detector into fiber pig-tailed one;where you can butt-couple cleaved end of optical fiber cable to window and use epoxy to fix it. User can use suitable fiber optic connector adapter( eg, FC) to connect signal fiber connector to detector through fiber pig-tail.

Yes, we were thinking we would use a coupling gel to connect a fibre optic stub to the window. Our customer has specified a F-SMA connector for this application but we have had enquiries for FC type connectors. I have not found a bulkhead connector which will accept a fibre stub to connect to the window.

Thanks for that. I'm already having a conversation with Thorlabs to see what they can offer. We use them a fair bit for other optical parts.
