Effect of Ice on an Explosion

04/05/2025 9:13 AM

I have asked this question before, I think, but did not get a direct answer. If an explosion is detonated in the core of an iceberg, will the ice absorb most of the energy from the explosion, via the three phases of the ice as it melts and then vaporizes or will the explosion happen too fast for this effect to have an appreciable effect on the explosion?

I recall an aircraft carrier being built with an ice and sawdust (pykrete) hull that was supposedly torpedo proof. It was never put into service because of the expense and difficulty maintaining the ice.

It lies at the bottom of Patricia lake in Canada.

Most of the explosive energy would be directed toward fracturing the ice. Wikipedia lists the slowest detonation velocity of an explosive at 3,400 m/s. Very little of this energy will be in the form of heat transferred into the ice for a change in the phase state of the ice into a liquid or gas.

An explosive charge detonated in a snow drift on the side of a mountain creates an avalanche of snow and not a flood of water.

I guess it depends on what type of explosion it is...

With all this in mind, why not use explosives to break icebergs into manageable pieces?

Lot of $$$ in fresh water available.

It would have to be an explosive that would not contaminate the fresh water...like hydrogen and oxygen mixture would probably work...

Drill holes with a large mining pneumatic drill...

fill holes with oxy hydrogen 30/70 mix...
