I thinking that gnats are helped out a lot by the wind generated by whatever you're trying to hit them with.

Very true tried to squash mozies with two hands the litle devils get blasted out just as your palms come together.

Try the back of the hand technique. It is more effective than using your palms.

My son could catch flies in flight. He said you had to use an open hand, fingers spread, till the last instant to keep from blowing it away.

Something interesting I found while perusing the net:

You can hypnotize a fly on a flat surface by putting a finger on each side of the fly and moving both fingers toward the fly at equal speed. I have tried it, and it works!

The fly will not move until you touch it.

The fly brain must use a comparator to determine movement and since there is no difference in either eye, it does not sense the movement.

I also recall that releasing any ordinance while supersonic (or transonic for that matter) is a bad thing.

I can recall seeing something about missiles being trapped in the boundary air flow & staying next to the aircraft that deployed them.

Yes. That’s one of the ‘Bad Thing’ that happens.

In fact, I believe pilots refer to boundary layer capture of ordinance as a Really Bad Thing.
