Best Automatic Transfer Switch

08/10/2025 5:12 AM

Do you guys, has a list of ATS having fastest change over time? Better than 16 milliseconds I'd really be happy to know, I am not trusting made in China ATS on this stuff. My range of application is

220V, 1 phase, 100A

Really grateful if you could recommend some

16 milliseconds is the period of one cycle of 60 hertz power. Detecting a power loss faster than one cycle to switch automatically will be the problem.

That's so technical and academic but thanks.

<Just for discussion>

That's the least right? Not half wave 8 milliseconds?

Please excuse me for being technical on an engineering forum.

Your power range indicates house power.

There is absolutely no need to transfer power that fast to a back-up power source.

Most home ATS units transfer within 15 seconds or so.

If your use is critical however, one cycle should be more than fast enough.

Well 15 seconds is quite a classic. You can do it 2 sec in manual mode But, yeah quite outdated a bit.

We have here an automatic transfer switch, 220VAC, 100A. Changeover in milliseconds… data sheet does not tell me how many, just that it is milliseconds.

This image is shared on the shopping site Amazon, and is posted on Amazon by some satisfied customer on the planet somewhere.

What makes this comment worthy is the ingenious enclosure. The DIN rail mounted switch is mounted in a wall mounted cookie tin. This very much looks like the tin of shortbread cookies I purchase around Christmas every year.

I simply don’t know what to say.

Where oh where has the Caption This blog gone?

[edit] I now get an error message ‘Cannot convert… I’ll see if I can get the image to stick

Hi gutmonarch, don't know where you are based but you could try researching company sites from well-known electrical switch suppliers like Schneider or Busch-Jager etc.
The Amazon ones in the Link provided are from chinese companies, as are most of these electrical switches.
Why do you need such a fast response from the switch (under 16 milliseconds) when the generator will typically take around 15-20 seconds to start up ? If the ATS took a second to kick in, so what ??

Well, battery powered back ups I should say. You can't possibly make a blink on your supply if it caters data networks, such sorts.

Data center?

A battery UPS?

Is there not an automatic transfer built into your UPS? If not, it really isn’t uninteruptable, now is it?

More and better information will almost certainly get you more and better advice.

First, they need a better understanding of UPS Techno-Babble. That article is almost twenty-six years old, but it does cover the basics.
