Best Practices for Designing a Microcontroller-Based Power Supply

08/25/2025 9:54 AM

Hello everyone,

I am currently working on a project involving a microcontroller-based power supply.

My main focus is on efficiency, reliability, and safety.

I would love advice from experienced engineers on:

- Best component selection

- PCB layout guidelines

- Noise reduction techniques

- Firmware integration tips

For reference, I am also exploring similar solutions here: [Kasuo Electronics](https://www.kasuo.com/).

Any guidance or suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

So, what besides the power supply is involved? Out of curiosity what power supply have you selected?

It is refreshing to see a project where birdseed is not a primary concern…

… you know: Cheap Cheap Cheap!

Good to see you here, thanks for coming over.

Oh, and when you say you are also looking at Brand X, what does that mean? Are you just driving traffic to their site?

Thanks for the warm welcome!
Besides the power supply design, I am also focusing on component selection (especially semiconductors) and PCB layout considerations to ensure efficiency and reliability.

For the power supply, I’ve been looking into a DC-DC buck converter design since it offers good efficiency for microcontroller-based systems.

And regarding Brand X — I only mentioned it as part of my research, not for promotion. I came across different resources while exploring semiconductor components, and I shared them to gather opinions from experienced members here.

I really appreciate your feedback — forums like this help me avoid the “cheap cheap cheap” trap by learning about quality-focused design approaches.

Your main focus on a project is on its efficiency, reliability and safety...

Since your project has two major sections, a power supply and a microcontroller, You may have to first establish each section's operational performance and the chosen functionality range... This approach can ensure the project's environmental functionality and compatibility to their intended application?

As the two major sections are assembled, together the efficiency, reliability and safety can automatically be incorporated as you conduct the step-by-step tests and validate each components purpose, performance as chosen to meet your required and expected functionalities for each respective operations..
