Partial Discharge Temperature Monitoring

09/22/2025 2:58 AM

I understand that there are devices on the market that combine partial discharge (PD) and temperature monitoring. Regarding solutions that simultaneously monitor PD and temperature, how do I choose a PD sensor (such as UHF, TEV, AE, etc.) that's suitable for different devices? Where should the temperature sensor be installed to most effectively detect hotspots?

You should review CR4 FAQ #14, specifically the paragraph that starts: Provide as much information as possible. Providing more information prevents us from playing 20 questions in an effort to assist. It also prevents snarky (though humorous) questions and comments.

My initial impression was that you should talk to a urologist and not an engineering blog.

I’m having a bit of trouble with inserting a chuckling .gif today.

If you have a favorite, imagine it inserted here.

What is the medium that you are trying to measure? Water, oil, full pipe, partial pipe, open channel weir, Parshall flume, Trapezoid flume, Ramp Flume, Cutthroat flume, etc.

How accurate does the temperature measurement have to be?

There are many types available, from cheap silicon devices to platinum RTD's.

The placement of the temperature sensor will vary by application. If you need a temperature profile of the fluid, multiple sensors can be arranged in a rake formation across the flow and connected individually or in parallel for average temperature.

There are many more devices to be considered, this is only a small sample.

See how many answers can be generated from such a broad non specific question?

If you want a more specific answer, give complete details of the process that you wish to measure.

Thermal imaging is not really sensitive enough for Partial Discharge detection.
