Metal Matrix Composite

12/12/2007 6:44 AM

Hi, i'm a mechanical student who is now conducting a research about rapid prototyping..I would like to ask a question which is: does metal matrix composite can be fabricated using 3D Printer?? Does it can be used in medical application?? I need to determine the sintering temperature for metal matrix composite which it's matrix is Aluminium.Where can i determine the sintering temperature for metal matrix composite?? Thank you very much for your help...

3D printers usually deposit polymers, not metals.

That's not to say someone hasn't developed one. I suggest you search the net and review the info on various manufacturers websites. They will give you info on the materials their machines use.

Metal Matrix Composites – which one?? And why an MMC?

What do you intend to "do" with your prototype part

AlSiC is a good MMC material. A SiC perform in the required shape is made, and then aluminum is infiltrated, usually under pressure. The final part is (near) net shape. The tooling required to mould the perform etc is usually quite cheap. This makes it a good choice for prototyping.

Thanks for replying me..Can you give me some suggestions on which homepage or manufacturers websites i can refer? Actually i have to mix two different powder together which consists of Aluminium powder and original RP powder used in Z-Corp 3D Printer. Can i mix like that? From previous research, my senior has sucessfully mixed those powder i have mentiond just now. From your opinion, do you think it becomes CMC OR MMC? Because it consists a lot of ceramic powder (original RP powder) compared to Al powder. Can i treat it as MMC? After that, it'll be fabricated using Z-Corp 3D Printer..Then,the spesimen'll go through sintering process. Then, i'll conduct tensile test on it. I also will use Tagughi method( DOE) to analyse the result..I have to determine the main effect, ANOVA and the optimum contidion for those spesimen..
