Paradigm Shift on Substation Protection

07/13/2026 10:27 PM

good day everyone, it's been quite a long time since i got back here. i ask apologies from the active members and masters here. anyways the question as follows: our existing practice in our company was to use the conventional charging system for a substation protection dc supply- battery bank plus conventional charger; recently an idea came into mind given the advancement in the technology specially on the Solar Hybrid technology utilizing Inverters in it's charging system. is my theory valid if that same technology, less the solar pv, used as replacement for the conventional charging system of the battery / dc supply for the substation protection or has anyone been practicing this on their designs? thanks

I recall that our battery chargers are galvanically isolated - I don't know if the solar-type inverters are designed as such. Also, we use 110V DC battery banks, and I'm not sure if that is a standard for the solar industry. Our substation equipment also has some additional surge protection in the standards, that would need to be verified for other equipment.

So, my answer is a definite maybe!
