When selecting Stainless Steel 316 Plates for an engineering or fabrication project, is the material grade alone enough to make the right choice?
Grade 316 is an austenitic stainless steel containing chromium, nickel, and molybdenum. The molybdenum content gives it better resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion than 304 stainless steel, particularly in chloride-containing environments. This is one reason 316 plate is commonly considered for marine, chemical processing, pharmaceutical, food processing, water treatment, and other demanding applications.
However, there are several other factors I would consider before specifying the material:
- Required specification: ASTM A240 / ASME SA240 is commonly associated with 316 stainless steel plate.
- Grade designation: Confirm whether the requirement is AISI 316, UNS S31600, or another specified designation.
- Plate thickness and dimensions: Thickness, width, and length should match the fabrication drawings and design requirements.
- Surface finish: Depending on the application, finishes such as No. 1, 2B, BA, brushed, or polished may be specified.
- Service environment: Chlorides, chemicals, moisture, temperature, and other operating conditions should be evaluated before final material selection.
- Mechanical requirements: Tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, hardness, and other required properties should be checked against the applicable specification.
- Material documentation: For critical industrial applications, mill test certificates and traceability information should be verified.
One point that is sometimes overlooked is that 316 stainless steel should not automatically be selected simply because it has higher corrosion resistance than 304. The actual service environment and project requirements should determine whether the additional alloying and material cost are justified.
For procurement, I would also verify the heat number, chemical composition, dimensions, surface finish, applicable standard, and inspection requirements before accepting the material.
