Two-Post Car Lift Lowering Unevenly

10/07/2026 10:01 AM

I picked up a used two post lift recently and noticed that it doesn’t always lower evenly. When I raise a vehicle, both sides seem to come up normally, but when lowering, one side starts moving before the other and I have to stop and reset it.

I checked the hydraulic lines for leaks and didn’t see anything obvious. The cables also look okay, but I haven’t adjusted anything yet.

Could this just be a cable tension or synchronization issue, or is there something else I should check first?

This is the Auto Lift that I have

Has the unit been working correctly and this condition has crept in, or has it never worked quite right?

Does this symptom also exhibit when the lift is operated with no load?

In the installation instruction, Section 4.7.2 Step Three details the installation and balance of the cable system. Was a review of this section useful?

In the troubleshooting guide, it advises that you contact manufacturer service/support (section 4.5 of the manual) if experiencing this issue as described. What was the result of that conversation? As you told us, you got this unit secondhand, so the mfgr might (understandably) be reluctant to offer anything useful in your case.

Hazarding a wild guess, sounds like something needs greased. Does she squeak (metal on metal sort of squeak) going up? If yes, that squeak is a scream for grease.

Might be worn sheaves or frayed cable, or main columns not lined up quite right, or… we just need some more.

Good points. I haven’t dug into the cable balance or sheaves yet, so I’ll go through that section of the manual and check it unloaded first. I’ll also look for any dry spots or cable wear. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
