Vena Contanta - Valves

11/05/2026 8:54 AM

Hi to all,

Based on the table below, is the pressure drop across a ball valve or a gate valve greater than that across a globe valve?

My question is: How is this possible, considering that, due to its geometry, I would expect a globe valve to create lower-pressure points than a gate valve or a ball valve, whereas a fully open gate valve has a much smaller effect on the pipe's cross-sectional area?

Re: Vena Contracta- Valves

Confusion abounds.

Is the first paragraph a statement or question? Seems to be a statement of condition, terminated with a mark of interrogation.

The second paragraph is identified as a question, yet seems to contain stated (non-conditional) facts.

Having reviewed the diagram several times, I see no reference therein to gate valve performance, yet the question seems to revolve around the comparative performance of a gate valve against… something else, I guess.

And, I believe the correct thread title is probably vena contracta (Ah, never mind; I find that the CR4 spellchecker autocorrects “contracta”, this is the likely trouble)
