critical component ...

...right... brakes, suspension components, CV joint?

There isn't too much else that is critical is there...? Furry dice? shouldn't that be mice?

I expect con-rod is a favourite?

LOL !!!!!!!

Use the net, try typing in conrod dimensions, or design one your self, or go to a scrap yard! Dissmantle an old lawnmower.... 'let me count the ways'(little bit of Shakespear there )

(you will probably learn more in a scrap yard than you will sitting at a desk)

Re:- car seat mountings.... suggest you .. get a rule and a vernier gauge and open your car door.... the mountings are right there under the seat!

Anyhow ...how can you be doing a final year and NOT have access to loads of car bits? There should be an entire dissmantled car lieing around for you to play with!

Or is it a paper only qualifiction?

Ah...if you want something out of the ordinary..

how about the stresses on the seat mountings? Probably much more complex and interesting than it would appear at first sight.

Enjoy

JCI (Johnson Controls, Inc.) and Lear Siegler are the largest American manufacturers. They manufacture in Europe and Asia. Get on the phone and call somebody in engineering at an office or plant and see if someone can get you in touch with a person who can get you what you need. If you call the corporate office you might make so contacts that would be use full when you are looking for employment.

This may not be critical to the performance of the vehicle but it is of crucial need for the driver/operator of the vehicle. Discuss with you project advisor. You do have one, do you not?

The so called "Head Rest" of all or almost all vehicles on the road and in showrooms today are merely ornamental and totally useless as a means to prevent whiplash.

This should be a fertile field for analysis of current items and redesign and possibly a patent for a new and useful model(s).

The rear swing arm of a solid axle ATV is a great component to model and run FEA on. It sees all kinds of bending and torsional stresses. Sorry, I don't have any dimensions or drawings though -- you're going to have to get out to your local ATV shop and get that.

The transfer case is an important part of any 4 wheel drive system. It distributes the drive power to both front and rear axles. Without this component you cannot have a four wheel drive system.

I have been a automotive designer for 20 years and although most of the suggestions below are good, they have all been analysed before by the industry. What would be of interest to both the 2 wheel and 4 wheel drive industries would be to analyse the forces on an airbag in a 4 wheel drive vehicle. You can obtain crash data (i.e. forces exerted on head during a crash) from the NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) or the Insurance Bureau down in the States does its own independent crash studies as well. The former being a government agency, I don't think it would be difficult to obtain data. If you can model the actual deployment of the airbag thru some sort of animation as the head is hitting it, I think this would impress alot of automotive engineers and industry types. So far, I haven't seen anyone in our company do this.

Good luck and IM me if you need any more help.
