Used Engine Oil Analysis

12/14/2007 11:45 AM

can somebody help me find a lab where they can perform tests on used engine oil to see what their metal content is in order to reveal how worn the engines are?

Your local commercial lubricant distributor likely has some company they routinely use for oil analysis. If not a mobile equipment distributor (like a Caterpillar dealer) sends samples for analysis also. They also could help.

I have gone to the Purolator lab in Rhode Island, I think, it was in the early 1980's.

Distributors of hydraulic equipment and lube oils will know of a lab in your area. They furnish you sample bottles and mailing boxes to send in the sample.

Once you have the results you need to know that, you have a snapshot of the wear contaminants in your engine at that time. Then you start taking successive samples at regular operating hour intervals.

If the initial test doesn't indicate anything out of normal, a good lab has norm's that they can give if they know the application, such as lots of sand in the oil from bad gaskets and air filter, or lead from bearings, knowing the source of the minerals you will see reported is required.

The engine on-going operating hour history, oil test results can be graphed (the lab may do this for you also) to watch for problems.

Depending upon what type of equipment you are monitoring, the particulate levels will probably be in the owners manual or the lab can give you some examples.

PS If the previous oil was run for 50,000 miles and then just changed you won't get a very good reading of engine condition.

I normally have a compression test done on any used engines I buy, they must be within 10% or 10 psi to run acceptable. Any good mechanic can do this. A not so honest "good" mechanic can also give you test results, and other lies. Know the source or get references.

IMR Test Labs in Ithaca NY, Charleston SC, and Louisville KY is a good all-around lab. I'm sure they would have the capability.

Check with the mechanics at your local GA airport. We routinely do analysis of oil when doing the 100 hour inspection of the engines on aircraft. This is a good indicator of the wear occurring within the engine. Also is done at the annual inspection on private aircraft. Most IA's have a kit with bottle and mailer in their tool box for taking a sample on the flight line. If not check with trade-a-plane for a listing of the labs. I think I was billed $30.00 for the last check on my continental engine. you can try contacting www.falconaviation.com for cost and availability.

We have been performing oil analysis on our own rolling stock for twenty+ years and we can accept samples from outside the company. We are in Alabama. You may email me at widmorro@southernco.com if you would like to inquire.
