The number and types of defects will depend on a number of factors, including the material(s) being joined, the parameters specified in the welding Procedure, and the expertise of the welder(s).

You may have an upcoming interview for welding. However, this is a very difficult situation. in CR4, it should always be a discussion of experiences and method in diffirent skills. However, please bear in mind that the member in CR4 are quite intelligent to detect your motives.

Now, Your questions, is a beginner where you are trying to know whether welding works will fit on yourself? Just friendly advise, make friends with those coded welders and they will tell you everything. minimum days you will learned is at least 2 weeks with your written notes.
Your question requires volume and depth to explain in detail and hope you understand.
For 1st query, type and no. of defects vary for process to process. They could be divided into process oriented, design related, geometrical, metallurgical etc. They also depends on the codes & standards, you follow to accept it as a defect or a discontinuity.
For 2nd query, the reasons are plenty depending upon the process and it may take min of 3 to 4 pages to give causes , remedial action and not to speak of sketches / figures. May be it is not practical in CR4.
Cracks certainly are not acceptable. For other defects , Acceptance level depends upon so many factors like size, acuity, orientation with respect to the working and residual stress, location with respect to weld, criticality of the structure, application, sensitivity, service /environmental conditions etc.

there is more welding defects and you have to chose select the welding type and there is acepance crateria in each standard like api 1104 and asme b31.3 you can find all you need in it ,
