Healing Brain Damage

03/17/2006 2:12 PM

A team of neuroscientists at MIT have shown that wounds to the optical tract in the brains of young hamsters that were treated with a solution of water and a special ionic peptide, healed in 30 days. Untreated wounds did not heal at all. This experiment was significant for a number of reasons. It was the first time scientists had ever seen neurons grow back, in any animal, in a wounded area (usually neurons grow around the wound).
