Camber Tolerances for 1008 Cold Rolled Steel

12/18/2007 10:25 AM

We just bought 40,000 lbs of 1008 cold rolled coiled steel .040 by 1.750 and we can't get it to run on a progressive die because it has allot of camber .The camber is .200 per 3feet does anyone know the reject able tolerance of this with ASTM or any other tolerance specifications, rule of thumb etc. We have opened up the the tooling as much as possible with out compromising the final product and it still will not run.

please help thank you

Camber Tolerances for 1008 Cold Rolled Steel

I have been using 6 mm thick BSK46 steel blanks 6000 - 11000 long for long members of truck chassis from Klokner, Posco & Tata Steel. Our technical delivery conditions are (which i believe is the industry norm) 1mm/ 1000 mm subject to a maximum of 6 mm

Isn't that part of your raw material specification? If it is not, you will probably have a hard time rejecting it back to your supplier, and you need to work with them to set it. I used to deal with large rolls of Aluminum when I was employed in your area many years ago. By any chance, are you at Delphi?

Camber of two tenths of an inch over a three foot length? A strip one and three quarters of an inch wide by forty thousandths of an inch thick?

Is the "camber" you are referring to the "set" that results from coiling long lengths of the strip?

If so, how did you run this progressive die before you acquired this material?

Have you considered a coil straightener between your uncoiler and your press?

If you don't have a material specification agreed with your supplier (Which you really ought to), I agree with the coil straightener. 2/10 of an inch over 3 feet could be easily straightened.
