BF Design And Engineering

12/21/2007 6:36 AM

Can we use mild steel for the BF shell of a mini BF of 128M3 volume to be operated in India?

"chartered engineer with experience of 44years in the primary zones of iron making areas like BF,Sinterplant, raw material handling in India and abroad "

So why do you need to ask us? We should be looking for someone with YOUR experience to ask this question of!

What do you mean with " BF shell " ?

"B.F." means Blast Furnace .

Blast Furnace is an iron making reactor with tall body of steel structure.Raw materials are charged from top and hot air is blown from the bottom.Due to the counter current flow, the ascending column of air will be in contact with a descending column of raw materials like iron ore, sinter, pellet coke etc in a blast furnace. The generated carbon monoxide reduces the iron ore to iron.

(Please refer to the book " Making shaping and treating of steel" if more details are needed.)

The body of the BF ( also called shell ) is made of special steel or boiler quality steel and inside there is refractory lining. The shell design is done taking in to consideration the temperature regimes, chemical reactions etc and also various other aspects like adopted cooling water circulation, stave's etc. The blast furnace design and engineering require experience and expertise.

I expected answer from the experts in the field of engineering design.

For mini blast furnaces, the shell design is different from large ones.Different designing institutes follow different designs as per their experiences in the Field.

I wanted to know from experts, in the feild , whether it is possible to use mild steel as the shell or body of a mini blast furnace to reduce the installation cost. The Boiler steel and special steel plates are costlier and availability also is limited in the Indian markets. I understand that in PRChina people go for mild steel structure.

Hope, I am clear to you.

As I mentioned in your other post, if you are expecting answers from experts in the field, then you need to go find them...most likely elswhere.

You may yet get lucky and find one here, but getting annoyed is not going to help you find what you need.

Thank you.In India most of us prefer Boiler grade steel .

In many BFs in China I have found that mild steel is used for the shell of the blast furnaces. In MBFs some of them have gone to 25mm thick
MSplates.

Please let me know which one you prefer considering the cost of investment on Boiler grade ?My observation is that compared to India and many western nations ,in China, the investment cost is reduced and there by the over all production cost also . As such pig iron in China is cheaper due to low price of Coke compared to India and also due to the manpower cost there. They make quick bucks

Perhaps many of our designers have to learn from china how to reduce the project costs.!!

I hope some of our learned members will come forward to suggest methods to reduce project costs and production costs in their areas of their respective areas. That will make this forum more lively.

Incidentally there is a yahoogroup -steel where I find more lively discussions happen, though I meet here many gentlemen also here!!

Regards,

P.G.Panikkar
