Studying for FE / EIT Exam

12/21/2007 9:05 AM

Hello all!

Tell me, what is the best way to study for the FE / EIT exam? I have been out of school for about 4 years and am wanting to take it, but am overwhelmed by the amount of stuff that is on that exam! I got a review book, but more than half of the review questions don't even match up to anything in the NCEES FE Reference Handbook! I had to reference old school texts just to answer the questions (which I wouldn't imagine would be on the exam, since there's no way you could answer the questions without memorizing the equations!) If anyone knows an efficient and beneficial way to study for this thing....LET ME KNOW?!

Don't panic!

One of the best ways to prepare is to take a Fundamentals of Engineering Refresher course. You might check with your nearest District Society of Professional Engineers to see when FE Refresher courses are scheduled in your area. They are usually held at, and jointly sponsored by, local colleges and universities (and are typically under the direction of and taught by engineering professors and instructors who are also registered PEs).

They'll cover typical exam problems in all fields and will usually have copies of recent tests available for review and discussion. They will also provide guidance on the things you should concentrate on, based on experience.

Good luck!

I agree take the refresher. But having said that the best way to study is probably to not study (at least for the first run at it). Go take the test, if you are lucky you will pass and problem solved. If you fail, then at least you will have had the experience and know what to go focus on.

The best way to do the FE is to take it in school while all that is still fresh... Oh well.

When I had to study for my oral exam to get my masters, I took a couple of weeks and reread all my textbooks back to back. It was amazing how much more sense it all made when you read it in one sitting, as opposed to a few pages a day for 9 months.

I had the same experience prior to returning to graduate school to study for my masters and doctorate. A second and third reading through your engineering textbooks can be quite enlightening. For one thing, it helps you understand how many equations were derived and the point of view and assumptions made to develop same. Once you know that and feel comfortable developing the equations, things make a lot more sense.

It also helps to take a runthrough of the texts every few years thereafter.

my 2 cents...i took the exam day bef yesterday. i think i did good..

my advice...concentrate on morning session..its so damn easy..if u study for morning thoroghly..u'll be able to answer 90% of afternoon and remaining u can just look up in the reference manual...honestly..dont kill urself trying to read everything...stick to basics..dont make mistakes..remember this is minimal competence exam....

one imp thing i suggest..read the reference manual word to word..completely..work atleast two problems on each topic..repeat everything conceptually 2 days bef taking the exam...

Any advice on the test or were you surprised to see anything? Any advice on the Bio section? I am not good at Bio or Chemistry. I am taking the test and would appreciate any advice!

Since the exam changed for 2014, the best I could find is EITFastTrack.com, EITExperts is good too but tends to have a lot of theory - if you like that. Linburg is good and NCEES has their own exam they sell/. good luck!
