CD Media Sheets

12/27/2007 2:30 PM

Hello all,

I am in a need of a rectangular (~2 feet x ~3 feet) media sheet, made od the same material as CDs/DVDs that we use on daily basis. Any idea where I could purchase it? It is intended for a personal artistic project. Thank you.

Regards,

Dex

It is called Tyvec. It is also used in bulk to wrap the outer wall of houses as a water and wind barrier. Try your local home hardware and lumber stores (Lowe's and Home Depot, etc.).

Hi Hero,

Thanks for your reply, but I am not sure I explained well what I'm looking for. A media sheet should be made of the same glossy/shiny/smooth/rigid material as a CD. The goal is to get a raibow colors effect when lit (only a side where CD is burnt would give colorful effect); what I'm looking for is basically large rectangular CD (that I would later cut into irregular-shaped pieces).

Regards,

Dex

The prismatic effect is from precision etching into the plastic CD. I don't know of an off-the-shelf equivalent.

Sounds like an interesting project.

Isnt the prismatic effect due to the diffrraction grating etched on the CD?

Correct, the closest cost effective material that I am aware of is going to be .065" polycarbonate sheet. That material is readily available. Aluminum backed circular etched is a whole 'nother problem.

The Material: "made od the same material as CDs/DVDs that we use on daily basis."

The Plastic Material Is

"I am in a need of a rectangular (~2 feet x ~3 feet) media sheet,"

XL10 Polycarbonate Lexan Sheet

Ever hear of Google.com which should be a constant companion of every good engineer.

BTW Tyvec sheeting is a wrapping plastic and is the result of misinterpreting your request.

CD's are not stamped out of a larger sheet, but are injection molded so there is nothing equivalent. You have to buy a sheet of plastic and stick something onto it, and cut it to size. Google holographic stickers or sheets.

Look here for some holographic sheets you could adhere to an acrylic base. (Cheaper than lexan). http://www.asp-rocketry.com/store/category.cfm?Category=205

I find it interesting how frequently so many of us interpret seemingly straightforward questions in completely different ways. To me, it seems like AccuDave's answer hit the nail right on the head, although it's very different from the rest of the answers.

To the original poster ... is AccuDave's website the solution to your problem?

My (very) original idea was to have a clear glass that would refract (not reflect) the spot light in a prismatic way, either by using special glass (any ideas?), or by coating "normal" glass.

Then the plan was alternated toward looking for a rectangular CD media sheet that would reflect (and not refract) the light into different colors.

Sticking hologramic decorative sheets to the piece of plastic would probably produce different colors in reflection, but differs significantly from the (very) original idea (refracting light through clear glass) - I still beleive it's possible to do it somehow. If it turns out it's impossible, then I will consider AccuDave's idea.

Thank you all for giving suggestions. Regards, Dex

There is a factory near me that commercially produces music CD's. WEA Mfg., Olyphant, Pa.

Check this link and give them a call, who knows....they might sell you a damaged piece of raw material !

Have you looked at the projector lamps used for disco lighting? They use (at least they did when I was involved with them years ago) glass disks to create light patterns. The disks had either colours or moulded patterns to refract the light. I think I still have some of these disks kicking around at home somewhere.
