Submerse Yourself in a Nuclear Weapons Lab

04/03/2006 11:15 AM

Welcome to a "sneak peek" article from the April edition of Design & Analysis Software from GlobalSpec.

On any given day, engineers at Los Alamos labs can enter a special room called "the cave" and experience a nuclear blast. The explosion, of course, is a computational simulation, and the cave is an immersive visualization center, built and installed with the help of FakeSpace Systems. As described in a recent issue of Cadalyst, the engineers get a sense of actually standing inside a nuclear reaction, the result of 33 projectors spraying out 43 million pixels into the room.

What is the scientific benefit

I hate to be a spoilsport here, but what is the scientific benefit of this type of simulation? It must have cost a fortune, and it's cool as whatever, but what would the scientists use it for other than to "see" what a nuclear reaction is like from the inside?

Los Alamos Simulation

Sometimes after a real spicy Mexican meal, I retreat to my "cave" and experience a nuclear blast of sorts... probably just as toxic. :-)
