Induction furnace slag

01/05/2008 5:18 AM

Is there any use for the slag from an iron making induction furnace? Where can we use it profitably?

Here in Pittsburgh, slag was widely used for landfill, road construction, and concrete.

There is a thread on CR4 where a fellow is looking for an economical hill; you might contact him.

Steelmaking slag is generally used as a base for road building, or as a landfill. Depending on your location, you may want to test the slag for it's abilities for removing arsenic from water as some of the components in the slag MAY be useful in this regard.

Slag can also be used in concrete for insulating under sea water piping for oil & gas pipelines. Also, the slag can be used as a grit in shot blasting of rusted metals.

In my previous company, the arc furnace slag was used in the blast furnace due to the Cao& Mgo content and also due to small Fe content in it.

Thanks for your kind answer to me

Not knowing where you reside, this is difficult, but as previously stated, here in Pittsburgh area it has been used in many ways and is a valuable commodity. By doing a search for companies such as Mill Services, you will find many reclaimers of slag and other dross from the Steel Making Process. Do a Yahoo search for Uses for Steel Mill Slag. You will be surprised.

Or, you could pile it up, build luxury homes on it, and start a pool on when it slides into Duck Hollow.

Road construction because of the pores in the slag and the way it crushes asphalt holds it together better than smooth stone. Makes a more durable road surface.

pgpanikkar,

Have you looked into making slag wool / mineral wool insulation from your furnace slag?

Not yet.I am not sure whether induction furnace slag can be used or not for making slag wool. I have seen that many of the Indian the induction furnace operators have not even bothered to get the chemical analysis of the slag. They are spending money to get it dumped out side!!.

the slag contain 15-20 % of sponge iron in it & 1% of scrap this can be extract by a small plant contain 2 stage and the rest non magnetic material can be used in manufracturing of bricks which has 10% more strength then ash brick.

I have commissioned the plant with a jaw crusher,-> conveyor,-> roll crusher-> conveyor->Magnetic separator-> Ball mill drum with a perforated shell (to remove slag )-> screen

I recover average of 8% Metal from the slag. I have controlled Fe in slag to around 10-11% by doing good melting practices.

I can give detailed design of the plant or consultancy if needed. You may contact me
