Fake Eggs Circulating in China

04/04/2006 4:53 PM

It looks like some cheaply made "chemical cocktail" eggs are being sold in China. I'm just wondering how you can manufacture a egg (shell and all) cheaper than having hens lay real ones. The eggs are made of gelatine, benzoic acid, alum, and other ingredients of varying toxicity. Eating these eggs has been pr oven to produce dementia in the eaters.
A link to how they are made.
A link to a research paper on this whole pirate egg problem.

If they were healthy...

...I could see this as a response to H5N1, but they're not and I doubt that these "eggs" are being advertised as fakes.

I believe they are deodorized rotten eggs. They are recirculated into the market.
