Monitoring hydronic heat zones

01/13/2008 1:04 PM

I have three 24v Honeywell motorized valves
which create a manifold off my boiler.
Other than installing pilot lights
and a common wire, can anyone suggest
a VERY simple and low-cost method
of determining which zones are calling
for heat?

Feel the pipes?

Do you want to know which are calling for heat? Or which are getting it?
E.G Are you trying to check on the operation of the motorised valves..or the thermostats that control them?

You can usually tell if a thermostat is on or off by rotating it slightly and listening for it clicking on or off......

If you want to sit in your living room and monitor the system then I don't see an alternative to lights.

It depends on what exactly you are trying to achieve...
Why do I always answer a question with another question?
Why not?

How old is this system?

Reasons are due to the age of the valves......I have installed valves that have a pilot light built into their electrical construction. If the valve is open, it sends a signale to the controller that indicates on the controller, the zones that are calling for heat.

And all your zones already have a 3wire-T-stat that sends the signal to the boiler anyways. This is the general/ standard operations from the OEM. The controller should have a signal light it emmits for which zone is calling for heat, this gives an indication to anyone servicing the unit, that it is functioning, or suppose to be.

Are you wanting to monitor this operation for statistical information? If so, you need to hook up a computer to the system for monitoring the given information. You could set up a wireless system to transmit this information to any remote station you set up as the main hub for collection. Good luck, Maximo

The circulating pump cycles more frequently than
I would like. I have set the thermostats to the
same exact temperature and was hoping to see
which zone is on most frequently.
