World's Strongest Glue

04/12/2006 12:45 PM

If you are looking for the strongest adhesive in the world, you are going to need a microscope. Apparently, Caulobacter crescentus, a form of bacteria now holds the record for strongest adhesive; natural or synthetic.
How strong is it?
From LiveScience.com. "The adhesive can withstand an enormous amount of stress, equal to the force felt by a quarter with more than three cars piled on top of it. That's two to three times more force than the best retail glues can handle."
Now if they can just figure out how to get the stuff out of the test tubes.

Hopefully, researchers can identify some substances to which the glue won't adhere. I like the idea of using this as a surgical adhesive. I wonder if it could be used to plug leaking dics or reconstruct spines.

Commercial Biomimetics

04/15/2006 12:17 PM

The structural and chemical nature presented by this superglue is an example of a specific 'biological design paradigm' for adhesion. For readers interested in the growing commercial development of 'biological design paradigms' leading to bio-inspired products, Biomimetic Connections, LLC at http://www.biomimeticsregistry.net provides examples of developments in material sciences and optical, acoustical, mechanical and intelligent software, systems and control engineering. This site also provides product design engineers with access to a comprehensive list of world-wide biomimetics-based IP and researchers interested in corporate collaborations. The current IP portfolio covers innovative design insights and solutions from Nature's self-assembly programs, efficient structural /functional outcomes, and information processing capabilities.

Cool stuff on your website. We talked about things like Fastskin when we were doing technology in the Olympics. I think that most of the more practical innovations in the next decade will come from biomimetics. What is the coolest technology you've been involved with?

For the moment, we are most excited about the development of chemical sensors modelled on animal sensors. The diversity of capabilities and range of sensitivities to draw on are astounding. As you might imagine, the development of nanotechnology and technologies to precisely interrogate and define biological systems are making all this possible. We agree with you about the future of applied biomimetics. Some examples suggest why. The following are all drawn from recent press releases: Beetle-inspired switch, virus-built batteries, telescope to get lobster vision, bio-inspired fuel cell, snake robots to the rescue, cockroaches make group decisions~inspiring new algorithms... As these bio-inspired products begin to emerge, it is our hope that species will finally be getting the respect they've long deserved!

I saw a report yesterday on how they are using sea turtles to create underwater robots. They are still coming to terms with how the flippers can be used to create thrust and for braking. I think that millions of years of evolution is the best example of refining a design.
Here is an article if you want to read more.

Thank you for this reference. Depending on the specific design problem at hand, we agree with you!

Hi, i made a page in my parents' website for the glue we discovered forest hills real estate world's strongest glue. thanks to Jay and Yves and Guanglai and Ben and the lab to have this work done. i'm posting partly to help boost my family's business website, i work there whenever school is not in session. thanks -peter tsang
