Betting on Software for Slot Machines

04/12/2006 1:30 PM

In the past, changing out a slot machine was a complicated operation that entailed opening the machine, replacing the chip inside, and then changing the glass display that conveys the game's theme. The modification usually took a day and could cost thousands of dollars, from ordering parts to modifying the machine. Now, casino operators can use software to instantly reprogram their slot machines, allowing them to adjust jackpots and odds on the fly - all from the comfort of a back office. Slot machines

I have to say that the best technological advance in slot machines is the paper pay out. It used to be that when you cashed out of a machine it would dump tons of coins and you had to put them in this giant bucket. Now it gives you a ticket similar to a train ticket. Last time we went to a nearby casino I got lucky and won $100. I'm glad that it didn't end up giving me 400 quarters!

You don't get the same thrill. I must say that very seldom do I get to walk around with a full bucket or for that matter with anything much in the bucket. I love the sound of all the coins dropping though it is in someone elses machine.

I'll admit that it was great to hear that plinking noise... makes you feel like a winner. And I still feed in quarters, I just like the slowing down and enjoying myself.
But I also know that at the end of the day my hands used to look like I was working on my car with all the dirt and oil on them.

Even more reasons to stay out of casinos. There are much better ways to waste your money.
