Control Power for Power House

01/23/2008 7:38 AM

We are in development of a Power house(11000V/400V, 5MW). Consultant have ask us about the type of control power, they are insisting on a 110V(DC) Battery bank and a charger panel as we already have in our other power house. We said why don't we use an inverter(UPS-220V AC) or 24V DC as a control power. Can any body guide us about which system is more suitable for power houses and why?

Your question cannot be answered with the data provided. The logic behind a battery bank of any voltage is to drive whatever is still needed to be driven, when the main power is off, and how long it needed to be driven.

Usually, if you need to move some heavy contactor or actuator a higher voltage battery set is more likely to deliver the power via ups or whatever. The control section may not need more than 24DC, but can be supplied with a DC/DC converter.

There are several things, as included in #1

The power house I have installed chargers/controls in was 48, and another 96VDC

The power is for control and monitoring, when the system supply goes AWOL.

Also the power is used for the CB spring re-winders to keep tension on the springs on spring loaded breakers (ok that didn't sound correct) they need to be kept wound up as they self unwind thru the motor gearbox

Snaketails,

I like that phrase "when the system supply goes AWOL". The concern is what I have heard described as a "black start". In other words, the ability to get the power house to generate electricity without any external power being used. Depending on the system components, this can require a lot of power. In addition to monitoring and control, that DC battery set is needed to ensure component safety and orderly shutdown if the generator trips off line for any reason.

It has to be a Dc source with battery back up so that absolute reliability of supply is ensured. Now between 24 V dc and 110 V Dc current values are lower in 110 V.As u know and handling a current of lower value is prefrred in any system ac or DC.Higher value of current may have a large Drop if control cables are not selected properly and may cause mal operation of protection system which are sensitive. I would frankly decide depending upon the load as to110V or24V DC

Thanks to all.

We have decided and adopting 110V DC system with battery backup.

Another consideration that wasn't mentioned is that all of your other power houses use 110VDC. If you change the voltage your electricians are going to have to remember that this one is the odd powerhouse that's different from all the others. Keeping everything the same helps to eliminate a problem where someone could get confused about what voltage should be in that power house. This is based on a philosophy I follow called the KISS method... or Keep It Simple Stupid.
