Aluminum Welding Wire

01/24/2008 6:18 AM

Dear friends,

We weld aluminum (mainly 5052-H32 and sometimes 6061-T4) parts with MIG welders.

Welding wire is rather expensive. What kind of wire and supplier are better? Is there essential difference in properties of the same kind of wire from various suppliers?

I don't mean this to be offensive, but...

If you can't afford the correct welding wire, all your welding is simply a waste of money. As to various suppliers, simply check to see if their product meets the spec (such as AWS).

The price of the wire should be of lease concern and should not take priority over the quality of the welds. The time a man spends welding the parts together can be wasted with inferior products that cost less. The time lost due to poor welds would increase the cost of the parts well over what the more expensive wire would. I am not saying that you should not shop around to get the best product for your money. Just as your customer will if the parts start falling a part.

Dear friends,

We have offers for wires 5356 and 4043.

I suppose that for welding of 5052-H32 and 6061-T4 wire 5356 shall be used, but there is opinion that wire 4043 is more convenient in use for welders.

Many thanks!

You ought to try to get somebody like Welderman to join in; he knows maybe ten times as much as I do (well, OK twenty times, but that's as far as I go) about welding.

Alternatively, go to the folks at Lincoln Welding. Nobody knows more than them.

But, here's my two cents:

Either 4043 or 5356 will do the job for you, but you have to look at the type of joints you have. In shear joints, 5356 will be better, but 4043 is easier to use. Have you looked at additional training for your welders?
