Heat Treatment Fixturing

04/20/2006 11:25 AM

James Guerin writes:
Anybody out there know a suitable way of fixturing for heat treat 4 inch long (100mm) solid tool steel rods (dia 5mm). We currently use stainless steel mesh baskets but as our furnace load is 3000 parts this is killing our productivity (loading/unloading the fixtures). The process of loading could be automated with pick and place but the fixtures get severely warped due to soaking at 1175 degrees C - and this wrecks the consistency of the fixtures only allowing manual loading.

Heat Treating Fixture

Have you considered ceramics? Look under "Machineable Ceramic" and see sites like http://www.morganadvancedceramics.com/materials/ma cor.htm or http://www.dynacer.com/PDF/nonoxideproperties.pdf. The RBSC (Reaction-Bonded Silicon Carbide) will handle 1350 C, and changes very little between machining "green" and finished state. Or consider getting LOTS more baskets, and having them loaded/unloaded offsite, perhaps by a local shelterd workshop or similar service place.
