For Vented or Sealed lead acid batteies, a cost effective and simple battery tester -YUASA Battery Tester- will do the job.

Take a look at the thread power problem, particularly post-93. There's a lot of information about batteries in this discussion. You might try asking this question on that forum, elnav is quite knowledgeable in this area. I will include the address in case you can't find it going to the forums. Also you might want to research a anti-sulfation charger. Good luck

Check out www.midtronics.com They invented a real neat technique using capacitance testing to measure battery condition.

The Yuasa battery tester appears to be a house branded version of th eMidtronics design.

REPLY: You ask a question for which the answers have often taken a complete book to write: Better than what? How do you do preventative maintenance right now? Are you plant maintenance staff or maybe the manager of such a department? Or are you representing a company selling a product or service, for this application? Forklifts use deep cycle traction batteries. UPS use batteries that can withstand deep diascharge but at much lower current rates. Some UPS must have excellent long term storage characteristics and extremely low self discharge.

This is completely different from the daily heavy use for traction motors in fork lifts. Properly conducted maintenance involves very different parameters for each type.

The advice to keep batteries cool below 25C doesn't help much if you live in low latitude tropical climates with daily ambient temps well above 25C and a work environment even higher than that. Temperature compensation techniques must be used in such cases. There simply isn't room enough to write a complete answer to your question here. If the battery manufacturers recommendation is not sufficient for your purposes, contact me off line. I earn my living as a consultant.

SIMPLY: Charge lead acids immediately after use,

This is to prevent sulfate from hardening on the plates (after awhile this creates shorts between plates making that specific cell bad, that in turn degrades the performance).

Check fluid levels frequently

The Lead acid battery for Fork lifts and battery trucks need special and regular care to ensure long life. Normally the manufacturers provide the maintenance schedule which should be followed strictly.

The following important points are to be ensured.

1. The initial charging of the battery should be done as per the instruction of the manufacturer if the battery is received with out initial charge from the factory. If the battery has come with charged condition then a boost charge may be given before connecting to the fork lift.

2. The battery should be recharged regularly as per recharging schedule, before it get dis charged to the recommended low level. It is always better to recharge the battery after specified hours of running of the forklift with out waiting for the battery to run down.

3. The battery terminals should be kept clean with out allowing sulphation and connection should be rigid not to allow sparks and damage.Connections should be checked regularly.

4. Ensure that the charging system of the fork lifter is working properly.

5.The acid level, specific gravity and voltage of the individual cell must be checked regularly to ensure timely correction. One damaged cell can spoil the complete battery.

For UPS the battery must be connected with automatic float charging system,The proper working of the system should be ensured. Regular periodical maintenance as per schedule should be carried out. If it is maintenance free sealed batteries then the automatic float charging system should be checked for proper functioning and batteries should be kept clean.
