Hello Guys,

Wish the best for all of u,

Can anyone give me the references for the formulae used to check the efficiency for the welded joints.

Thank you

Can you explain your request in more detail? Are you looking for a method for testing the quality of a weld. Or, are you looking for how to specify a full-strength weld? Or, are you asking about full penetration welds?

I want to know whether a joint made by welding has enough strength to bear the load under which it will be subjected or it will fail. There must be some calculations for this.I mean minimum thickness of weld for a particular load which will be put on this welded joint.

There are several good places to start.

www.aws.org

will put you at the website of some really good folks. They have lots of books and references.

Lincoln Electric has good design info, particularly from Omer Blodgett.

John Hicks is another world class expert on design of welded joints. I think his book is McGraw-Hill but go to Amazon and be sure.

I would also like to affirm Blodgett. His book 'Design of Weldments" is dirt cheap at the site, and will answer all your questions.

Can you please submit a drawing for the joint to indicate all dimensions, applied forces, type of materials, and joint design details to clear if there are a fillet and/or groove welds to calculate the throat of weld. A stress analysis must be carried out to indicate the shear, longitudinal, twist, and compressive stresses, to be compared with allowable stresses of material.

You wil Need to either do a destructive test i.e checking the force of the weld or X ray or ultrasonic testing using known good parts to create a "weld signature " to comapre against .But first you need a bench mark of what a good weld is .

There are tons of places that delve into the different types of welding joints. ASME, AWS API etc.As a general rule one should have root to face thickness of at least the thinner of the 2 pcs. to be welded not counting weld reinforcement. This will work for most types of weld joints. Hope this helps.
