How to Design with Nature in Mind

05/02/2006 9:39 AM

Nature's designs are optimal and based on life-sustaining principles. This Innovation Guide describes how designers can envision nature as a teacher and a partner in working with emerging technologies, to build effective design solutions that are also compatible with life. For example, one inventor is applying the spiraling patterns found in shells, galaxies, and whirlpools in drains to design efficient pumps and fans. The Guide also describes a number of other interesting developments, including packaging made from renewable resources.

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from the May edition of the Materials Handling newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on plastics industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Materials Handling today.

Commercializing 'biological design paradigms'

05/03/2006 1:25 AM

It's gratifying to read how 'biological design paradigms' are increasingly attracting the attention of engineers and product designers. This trend is clearly reflected in the rapid growth of bio-inspired intellectual property. During the past several years more than 80 patents and patent-pendings have emerged that can be regarded as biomimetic in origin. Of these the majority cluster in biomaterials (e.g. bone, tissue engineering) and in intelligent software, systems and control engineering. Close behind are biomimetic IP portfolios in mechanical engineering, followed by acoustical and optical engineering in the third cluster. Technologies that provide the ability to interrogate, model and define 'biological design paradigms' are the primary drivers for these developments. The message is clear: product design engineers stand to benefit by asking if biology offers important solutions or insights to their design problems.

Optimism

05/16/2006 1:51 PM

Reading about real-world achievements is a cause for optimism. All too often, discussions of environmental responsiblity devolve into finger-pointing and a laundry list of "shoulds".
