Plastic RFID

05/04/2006 11:46 AM

Scientists have developed a high-speed RFID tag that uses plastic electronics. This approach lets manufacturers print an RFID chip directly onto a plastic substrate along with its antenna. Complex assembly steps are eliminated. Read more in this Philips Research press release.

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from the May edition of the Materials Handling newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on plastics industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Materials Handling today.

Recycling

I wonder what will happen to these tags after they are used. Is there room for recycling? After all, products that are are made of plastic can be melted down and re-formed.

Plastic RFID

I assume that plastics are more inert and would have better applications on the human body. Just think, instead of hand stamps, you could get a temporary RFID "Tattoo" at a concert or a theme park. Not only could you be tracked, but you could be selectively hit with advertising for your favorite products and pastimes.

Minnesota has already banned the use of mandatory RFID tags on people. Not sure if your application would fall under that as it is not permanent.

Doubt it. That would alienate his fundamentalist base, many of them believe that RFIDs are the "number of the beast" from Revelations.
