Removing Epoxy Resin Adhesive in situ

02/10/2008 5:17 AM

I am about to use UHU plus endfest 300 2-component epoxy resin adhesive to fix a plastic door runner to a ceramic stone tile (to avoid drilling holes in the tile). Whilst this will work to keep the door runner in place, I am wondering how I will be able to remove this in a few years time whilst the door runner is in situ?

Anyone have any ideas, suggestions or experiences removing epoxy resin adhesive whilst in place?

Warming up the epoxy will do the trick (around 100 to 150 celsius depending..). Just make sure the material around can take a bit of extra heat.

Thanks Teddy,

Appreciate the answer, and will be able to do that with boiling water first.

Allways a good practice to make a test before use (there are differences)

Heat gun is best or a hair dryer might do it.

Surprisingly we had a similar problem with an anaerobic 'taper lock' - a sort of strong thread lock. We tried to split the taper with brute force (& ignorance) but it would not budge. We were told to try a heat gun, after getting it up to temp, I think around 180*C is fell apart!

I have also had experience with epoxy and as previous commenter says heat will do the trick.

To remove it in a few years time, place a block of hardwood against it and hit it with a hammer very hard, the glue line should shear easily.

The important thing is to break it in shear rather than trying to lever it up. Alternatively an old wood chisel or scraper held as flat to the floor as possible and use the hammer again.

If the stone tiles are sound the glue will shear or pop off without damaging the tile.
(May be best to do it on a nice cold day, or cool it with freezer spray)

I second the response #1 by TeddyDiver for heating. I know that our technicians here can salvage an expensive ($5k USD) underwater connector that was epoxy potted by heating it in an oven to soften it sufficiently to "dig" it out of the connector. The temp may be a little higher than 150 C, but it would be best to fully cure a sample, and then test it at increasingly higher temps to see where it weakens sufficiently.

you would be better off using clear silicone seal as it will be removable with a knife and coarse steel wool. It is not strong, but it is flexible and will cure in place in a day and hold the runner quite well. When it come time to remove the runner, just pull it off and cut the excess silicone away with a knife and remove the bits with steel wool

Rather than using epoxies or silicon that may bleed into the surface of you ceramic stone and leave a permanent mark across the floor after removing, try a good double sided tape instead. 3m makes a few that you may want to check out first. If you still want to use silicon, try in a inconspicuous place to see if it leaves a mark after clean up. I would not use epoxies as it may also sink into the surface of an unglazed tile and would be very hard to totally remove. (Just my .02)

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions. I'm going to first try the tape suggestion, if that doesn't hold, then silicone sealant, and my last resort will be the epoxy resin.

This forum really helped me a lot.

Best wishes,

Brian.
