To understand the need for harmonic filters the knowledge of harmonics in the power system is essential.

The power distribution company is contractually obliged to supply the user 50 /60 Hz sine wave power supply at contracted voltage. In actual practice due to non linear load the supply contain other frequencies called harmonics ( other than the standard frequency )resulting in additional energy loss while operating the machines especially in non linear loads. IEEE 519 stipulate conditions and standard of permissible harmonic distortion in the supply system to maintain permissible reduced voltage & current distortion levels.

By installing Harmonic filters, they filters out the unwanted harmonics from incoming supply and avoid feed back of harmonics produced by non linear load in the factory to ensure compliance to IEEE 519.

In addition to harmonic filtration they improve voltage profile and reduce power loss.It will also prevents malfunctioning / nuisance tripping of drives, relays and improve power factor with properly designed Harmonic filters available in market.
