Next X Prize could be for 250 MPG Car

05/15/2006 9:08 AM

You remember the X Prize Foundation, right? The outfit that awarded a $10 million prize a few years back for the first reusable civilian space aircraft. Well, the inside track on their next big prize, to be announced later this year, is for the development of a car that gets 250 MPG. This is in addition to the recently announced $2.5 million dollar contest (in conjunction with NASA) to develop a lunar lander, which is to take place in October.

This is an interesting way to encourage innovation. Usually governments finance these kinds of ventures, or at least commission private companies to do so in the form of bidded contracts.

Speed limits?

I hope they place some minimum speed limits. Fred Flintstone got more than 250 miles to the gallon, but I don't want to foot power my car.

It's Already Been Done

I posted a story about "plug-in" battery stack cars getting 250 MPG back in August. The link to the MSNBC report still works, so click on through and read about it.

Reward: 250 mpg

Three cheers for this new competition. Private money is desparately needed in American R&D. The Military-Industrial Complex of which Eisenhower warned in 1960 has hijacked too many government programs. Funding those programs pulls money and focus from critical civilian needs. Example: Had we a 250 mpg car would we give a hoot about OPEC countries? And think of what we could do with all the dollars, and all the petroleum that now goes up in smoke.
