Designing an RFID Antenna for 13.56MHz

Help please.. we need to create an antenna that will detect tags that passes through a door. we're planning to design an antenna situated within the doorpath in order to capture all tags that passes thru the entrance.

What are the first thing to consider in creating the antenna? We're planning to use copper in constructing the antenna. Do we need to create an antenna with big dimensions to capture the reading range that will scope the whole doorway path?
