Contour Interpretation

03/03/2008 6:25 AM

Hi!!

While interpreting the contours elevation, as we all know in a detail topo sheets only the index contours will be populated with an azimuth value, working out the values for any contours that falls in a depression area becomes a hassle for the map reader, is there a way to over make it more easy for the reader.

Eg. look at the snapshot..Remember the contour interval is 20mts

Good luck!!!

I don't see the problem..

Mind I used to love drawing scale cross sections from contour maps when I was studying A level geography.
Most people just don't know how to read a map .

It's not too hard if you do some practice. Get a topo map of a park near you and go out there and walk around and try to relate what you read on the map to what you see on the ground. A couple days of this and it starts to make good sense for most people. Or, if you hunt, take a topo map with you and do the same.

You can get a guide to topo maps from the USGS if you live in the US.

In the example you included, notice you've got one depression where you have lines normal to the contour (in effect how water would run). Everything else is an elevation and you just count off 20 m at a time. They never skip an interval.

Speaking of needing to be able to read the contour lines on a topo map...
