Part of a substation design, what are the major specifications the engineers need to prepare. I appreciate the answer with example. Thanks,

you must know following things.

1) voltage level,e.g.66 KV/11kv, 132 KV/66 KV or more

2) capacity of Transformer( MVA)

3) lighting arrester capacity.(in KA)

4) CT & PT ratting and ratio.

5) type of circuit breaker and its capacity in KA

6) foundation of above all things.

7) protection relay

8)switch gear

9)Isolator

sckt mva, soil resistivity, ambient temp, sckt force calc, conductor data, equipment specification, no of I/C bay & O/G bay etc etc. It also depends what if your scope of work. I feel one need to work under some supervisor and gain experience than just doing it on own without having previous experience.

I think this can not be taught over forum.

Kindly go thru the text books and Electrical Engineers Hand book.

First You should get answers for the following:

What is Substation ?

Where to Put up Substation ?

How to install Substation ?

Like this you have to develop the answers ........

I think people /engineers in 21st century go crazy on short-cut method. I feel this is possible in IT but not in Non-IT field, where one require to work years to gain knowledge and develop confidence on oneself and to client.

I know that there are a lot of contractors spec-ing in wireless systems for monitoring and switching these sub stations I know of a company remote control technology that does wireless switching up to 5 miles non-line of sight! They also have a system that works of the cell network check them out and see if any of this helps.

Sir,

Do you really think that you can design a substation with the help of some replies from this thread. It takes a life time experience to design a proper protective system of substation, leave alone the total design. With 35 years experience and assistance of a team of highly qualified Electrical Engineers it took three months to finalise the design of a substation.

You have not even provided the basic information so that any one can even try to provide an answer to the query.

1. What is the Voltage to be handled by the substation.( LT, HT,EHT. )

step up or step down.

2. What is the KVA capacity.

3. Is it out door or in door substation.

4. Is it meant for long distance transmission system.

4 Is it for local distribution of HT/ LT lines or only for local transformers.

5. How much of area available for the construction of substation.

6. Do you have an existing building available or have to construct new building if

indoor

7. Is your distribution system underground or overhead.

8. Is the substation required for installation near explosive or chemical factory.

9. Is it to be installed in thickly populated city area or remote village.

10 Can you design for oil filled transformers or dry type transformers.

11 What type of circuit breakers you would like use in your design.

12. What is the type of protective system you want.

13. Is it a manned substation or un manned.

The list will go on ...........

So give some clue
