Calculating Worm Gear Diameter

03/04/2008 6:11 PM

Does anyone know the forumla for diameter of a worm gear needs for a certain number of teeth at a certain pitch.

multiply thread pitch by the desired tooth count to find the circumference of the blank, then divide by pi (3.14159) to find the diameter.

This is my best guess....

Re: formula for Diameter of worm gear

That is correct for the wormgear pitch diameter. The outside diameter is given by:

DO = 2C - d + 2a where:

C = center to center between worm and gear;

d = pitch diameter of worm;

a = 0.3183 * (normal circular pitch of worm and gear).

For more info, see any edition of Machinery's Handbook (or page 1916 of the 24th ed.).

Hi.

Your original formula works too. PDwg=(N*P)/PI where N=#teeth in worm gear and P=Lead/# threads in worm.

Best,

John
