Automobile Window Will Not Stop Going Up

03/13/2008 1:57 PM

Hello. I am a senior in an engineering class at my high school. My group and I are trying to create a product that will close an automobile's windows without any passengers in the car. To do this we are using an RF receiver, transmitter, and Crutchfield Window Module AU-93. The Module is meant to shut off the window motor once a sensor senses that the window is fully closed. In my previous question, I asked what rest at ground meant because the specifications for the Module stated that in order for the sensor to work it needs to be at rest at ground. My group and I looked at the suggestions that were given to us and attempted them. Now I am wondering, if the Module is defective, is there another way to access and shut off the window motor. We have thought of inserting a circuit breaker to somehow complete this job. We realize that there are other solutions to this problem that hopefully you can help us find. Has anyone else put something similar to this in their car? If so, your input would be especially helpful.

Thank you,

T.Adams

Having looked at the Crutchfield Owner's Manual for the AU-93, you should be able to test it as follows:

For the right window, get a single pole change-over toggle switch - this is your dummy "window up" switch. Connect the brown wire to the AU-93 to the centre (common) contact, connect one of the other contacts to +12V and the other to ground (0V). Set it up to wind up the window.

If the window starts going up*, toggle the switch to the other position. If this doesn't stop it, there's something wrong with the module.

*If the window doesn't move, reset and start again with the switch in the other position. The window should now start going up, and stop when you toggle the switch over. Again, if it doesn't stop, the module is U/S.

If one or the other arrangement works, take a note of which way round it was and compare with one of the sketches in the manual - you should be able to figure it out, so you can use the existing car door wiring. Unfortunately, they don't explicitly state useful stuff like "switch shown with window closed" or whatever - they talk about a rest position (which I assume means the STOP condition, but I couldn't be sure).

Hope this helps & good luck,

John.

I'm hardly an expert in this, but the better car window openers have a means of detecting blockage (little johnny's head or arm); I presume they do this my monitoring the current to the motor: if the current exceeds a preset value, then either a relay switches the direction to lower the window, or a part of the controller does the same.

The same concept could just turn the motor off, but then Johnny remains trapped...

keep up the good work!

Dick

To my knowledge, once activated, ie close or open fully, the stop is a reed switch next to the main current carrying wire to the linear motor- at full stop either up or down, the motor draws more current in a stalled condition, the em field then disconnects the reed switch contacts- this is a generalised view, & will differ in details, features etc.

Hello T Adams.

Please tell us what vehicle you are doing this on???!

If you really want an answer.

I know people are trying to keep some of the experiment secret so as to not let the cat out of the bag, but this area has extensive patents held originally by Clifford and now by DEI, but they are not using many of them overtly. I know someone who was instrumental in making those patents come to life and can call him on the phone and make sure you are not on shaky ground in regards to marketing your idea. I can help and am willing to do so. I have given my credentials and now would like a chance to exercise this area of expertise.
