Mixing of Gases at different pressures

03/14/2008 1:49 AM

What happens if two gases say gas 1 at 30 bar and gas 2 at 20 bar mixes to gether using a "T" arrangement?

And what if gas 1 is at 20 bar and gas 2 is at 19.9 bar?

This wouldn't happen to be your homework assignment now, would it?

Using Dalton's law of gas mixtures

P= P1+P2+P3+P4+.....+Pn

where P:total pressure of gas mix

P1:pressure of gas 1

P2:pressure of gas 2

and so on

as long as P1, P2, P3, and P4 are mixed in one container.

i hope i was helpful.

What is the pressure of the third branch? If it is lower than any of the two branches (such as an empty vessel), then both gasses will flow to the lower pressure.

To determine the actual pressure, try Dalton's law of partial pressures, or maybe even Bernoulli's equation?
